This smoothy was inspired by my eldest sister, mostly because she is in love with chai lattes, but also because she is a busy mom of three who doesn't have much time for extras. This smoothy is quick and easy, healthy and delicious - a little 'me' time in the morning to boost the body and soul. I usually rotate between this smoothie, and my espresso cinnamon banana smoothie.
Chai spices have long been known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and digestive properties. I also added some raw maca powder, a natural root that is said to balance hormones, decrease anxiety, and boost energy levels and libido. Maca can be found at most health food stores, and though it can easily be omitted, it never hurts do what you can for your body. Almond butter adds a little protein kick and richness, and frozen banana with coconut milk makes it creamy and rich. Finally, flax seed adds omega's and fibre.
The chai spice combination is a basic blend, and is based on my tastes. As with most of the recipes I post, feel free to add or subtract as you wish. Don't feel you are limited to using it in this smoothie - it is wonderful in so many recipes, such as oatmeal or other breakfast grains.
